    A Study on the EFL Learners’ Ability in Taking TOEFL Listening Test

    The recent study aims at investigating how far the ESP learners’ ability and the strategies they employed in mastering the Listening Comprehensions skills of the TOEFL test. The descriptive research design focused on content analysis was applied to gather the data taken by 25 students as participants of the study. In order to see the learners’ ability in Listening Comprehension (LC) skills, the 50 questions of Listening Comprehension Test were given through the Pre-Test and Post-Test during one semester course from the Longman Introductory Course For The TOEFL Test (Green Book) by Debora Philips (2004). The observation and the test were the instruments in obtaining the data needed. The data was then analyzed based on the 3 (three) major skills in Listening Comprehension part A, B, and C covered 12 sub-skills or the strategies applied. The result of the ESP learners’ ability in Listening Comprehension (LC) was moderately revealed and they were in the level of ‘Low Intermediate’ level in general. However, there was still few students had not improved yet. Moreover, in Part B (skill 7 – 9) gained the highest scores percentage among two other skills, followed by skill 10 – 12 in Part C Long Talks. Meanwhile, Part A (skill 1 – 6) achieved the lowest scores’ percentage in implementing the strategies, specifically in the skill of 4, 2 and 1 (Passives, Negatives, and Restatements) in sequent. Thus, it is suggested that students need to do more exercises on TOEFL Listening Part A suggested strategies by Philips (2004). Moreover, with the advanced of technology, learners can improve their English Listening skills by accessing the free online TOEFL courses from experts in the internet besides doing more drillings on YouTube channels and Podcasts

    PELATIHAN KEMAMPUAN BERBICARA DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS MASYARAKAT PESISIR PANTAI WINI PERBATASAN NKRI-RDTL

    The community service of the English Speaking Skills Training for the Wini Coastal Community at the NKRI-RDTL border was carried out by a service team, namely lecturers from the University of Timor. Wini Beach is located in North Insana District, North Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The training was held for 3 days at the Hamusu Wini Village Office and Wini Beach. The method used in this training is role play between the seller or guide and foreign tourist. The number of community service participants is 30 participants, coming from various backgrounds, with an age range of 7 - 29 years old. After the training, it can be concluded that the trainees are able to speak in Engl ish. The service also suggested that similar training could be carried out to improve the knowledge and fluency of the Wini coastal community in speaking English.Pengabdian Pelatihan Kemampuan Berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris Masyarakat Pesisir Pantai Wini Perbatasan NKRI-RDTL dilakukan oleh tim pengabdi yaitu dosen dari Universitas Timor, kepada masyarakat pesisir Pantai Wini. Pantai Wini berlokasi di Kecamatan Insana Utara, Kabupaten Timor Tengah Utara, Nusa Tenggara Timur. Pelatihan dilaksanakan selama 3 hari di Kantor Desa Hamusu Wini dan Pantai Wini. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan ini adalah bermain peran (Role Play) antara penjual atau guide dengan wisatawan asing. Adapun jumlah peserta pengabdian sebanyak 30 peserta, berasal dari latar belakang yang berbeda-beda, dengan rentang umur 7 - 29 tahun. Setelah melakukan pelatihan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa peserta pengabdian mampu berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris. Pengabdi juga menyarankan agar pelatihan serupa bisa dilakukan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kelancaran masyarakat pesisir Pantai Wini dalam berbahasa Inggris

    The aims of this study are to find out the process of Keti Amenat ritual, and the meanings contained in this ritual. Method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method and the data collection techniques are recording and interview. The data obtained from informants, including Amnaneor the elders. Criteria specified as informants are people who have good knowledge and actively practice of Keti Amenat ritual. The result shows that the process consists of three stages: preparing the sick, offering animal sacrifice, and offering food to the spirits of ancestors. Meanings embodied in the ritual are religious meaning, social meaning, and magical meaning

    ASSESSING ABILITY ON SPEAKING ENGLISH OF STUDENTS OF SMPN NEONBAT

    The current research was carried out in order to answer the following questions: 1) What are the level of the students’ ability in speaking English and 2) What are the difficult aspects in speaking English. This research was conducted on the students of grade VIIIA of SMP Negeri Neonbat, in North Central Timor Regency. The subject of the research was the eighth grade students consisted of 20 students. A speaking test, observation and documentation were the instruments for collecting the data. The researcher took three topics in speaking test mentioned as: 1) telling short story, 2) telling daily activity and 3) describing people.  In analyzing the data, the researcher implemented qualitative method. The data then be analysed following eight steps as follows: 1)playing the record, 2) replaying the record, 3) transcribing, 4) codifying, 5) categorizing, 6) tabulating, 7) analysing and 8) discussing. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was found out that the students’ level of ability in speaking was good and the average score is 79.62. Vocabulary and grammar aspects are still difficult for the students in speaking English since the scores for those two aspects were lower than the aspects of pronunciation and idea.   Keywords: assessing, speaking, ability

    THE USE OF YOUTUBE VIDEO TO IMPROVE THE SPEAKING SKILL OF GRADE XI STUDENTS AT SMK CLARENT KEFAMENANU

    This study tends to identify whether the use of YouTube Video can improve students’ speaking skilland to measure to what extent YouTube Video can improve students’ speaking skill. The method used in this study is classroom action reserach. The research was conducted in two cycles. Every cycle consists of four steps; planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data collected were in the form of qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were gained through observation checklist, and questionnaire. While the quantitative data were obtained by conducting a test for cycle one and cycle two, and the data were in the forms of the students’ speaking scores.The results of this research showed that using YouTube video in the teaching and learning of speaking was proved to improve the students’ speaking skills. The students were more enthusiastic in learning speaking. They could actively involve in the speaking learning process. Moreover, the students were more confident and fluent in speaking practices. By comparing the total average scores of the students’ cycle one test and cycle two test, the researcher found that there was improvement from 41.5 to 61.4. &nbsp

    A STUDY ON THE STUDENTS’ ABILITY ON LISTENING COMPREHENSION TO THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI MAUBELI

    The aims of the study are to find out the third year students’ ability in listening comprehension at SMPN Maubeli, and to find out which parts of listening comprehension are difficult for the students. This study employed descriptive qualitative method.This method was employed to clarify the problems of the study and to describe students’ listening ability. The instrument used in this study to obtain the data needed from the students was test consisted ofcompletion test and multiple choice.The result of the study is 76%for multiple choice, and the score achieved forcompletion test is 71%, so both results are classified good.Based on the result of the test, it can be concluded that the students’ listening ability isquite good supported by the students’ mastery of vocabulary

    ADDRESSING TERMS USED IN NATHAN AND NADIA MOVIE

    This research tried to obtain the result of analyzing address term in Nathan and Nadia Movie by MD Entertainment. In this research, the researchers used descriptive qualitative method that primarily exploratory research. There are forty-three dialogs that represent all the dialogs inside the movie that represent all the address term. So, the chosen dialogs analized by put them in the table and devided into each part of kind of address term,  there are five types of addressing term, they are : using name, using intimacy, using respect, using kinship and using mockery name. the analysis result from this study,  The types of addressing term score showed that each types of addressing terms present different score. The types of addressing term commonly used are addressing terms using kinship name 36,59%. Then it is followed by  addressing terms using name  which presents 24,39% and then followed by addressing term using intimacy  present 17,07% and addressing term using  mockery  name present  17,07%, and the least used is addressing terms using respect name  presents 4,88%. The researchers  concluded that addressing terms using kinship name is the most and frequently used

    A MASTERY STUDY OF THE EXPOSITORY WRITING OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI NAIOLA

    This study analyzed the mastery level of students in the third year students of SMP Negeri Naiola. The aim of the study is to find out the mastery level of students about Expository Writing. The method used descriptive qualitative method. Therefore, this research used writing test. After collecting the data, the writer analyzed them based on the three generic structure of Expository Writing text namely: Thesis, Argument, and Recommendation/Reiteration. The result of data analysis shows that the students have mastered expository text. It is based on the data that their average score is 83 and categorized as Excellent. This means that the students have ability in Expository Writing. However, the students still found difficulties in in mastering argument of the components of personal expository text. The data shows that their total number of wrong answers is 48. To overcome the students’ difficulties in expository writing, English teacher have to guide and motivate the students to master expository writing based on the generic structure of the text

    Implementation of Storytelling Technique to Improve Speaking Skill

    The target of speaking skills is difficult to achieve in junior high school, since instruction and learning of speaking can present certain challenges for teachers and students. Therefore, this study aims to explore how storytelling affects students' speaking skills and how they feel about using storytelling technique. This research was conducted in class VIII Kefamenanu middle school. This current research utilized classroom action research in which interview and observation were the instruments to use in obtaining necessary data. The mean score from the results of the implementation of the first cycle test was 59.67 and 75.21 for the second cycle, which experienced an increase. Thus, the result indicated that storytelling technique was an effective way to upgrade students’ speaking skill. In addition, storytelling techniques allow the students to speak more clearly and they also gain more confidence in practicing their English
